Emergency Door Locks
In an effort to increase safety on campus, new emergency locks are being installed on classroom doors. These new locks allow individuals to lock the door from inside the room in an emergency.

Toggle ItemHow can the door be locked during an emergency?
To lock the door in an emergency, make sure the door is closed and then press the button indicated by the emergency lock sticker on the classroom side of the door.

Opening the door from the inside of the classroom will unlock the door.

Toggle ItemAre the locks programmed to self-lock in an emergency?
No, the doors are not programmed to “self-lock”. The button would need to be pressed for the door to lock.

Toggle ItemCan the door be locked from a podium or from across the room?
No. The door cannot be locked from the podium. Someone will have to physically press the lock button on the door or doors.

Toggle ItemWill the locks ever lose battery power or go offline?
Locks are monitored for low batteries and when low batteries are detected, they are changed. If locks lose battery power, they fail into the lock position.

Toggle ItemCould the door ever accidentally lock people in?
No, the door is designed to unlock when the door is opened from the inside.

Toggle ItemIf an emergency is unfolding, would someone be able to hold the people inside the room hostage by locking the door?
When the lock button is pressed – the lock can still be opened from the outside by those, such as emergency responders, who have card access or a key to the room. It can also be unlocked from the inside by opening the door.
